The College of Medicine and Health Sciences at the Arabian Gulf University (AGU), in collaboration with the Clinical Research Centre and the World Health Organisation (WHO) Collaborative Centre for Health Professionals' Education Development at AGU, recently hosted a workshop entitled “Conscience and Curiosity: The Ethical Boundaries in Research”.
The workshop was presented by Prof. Khaled Gerish, Director of the Clinical Research Centre, before an audience that included numerous students, faculty members and several individuals with a keen interest in research ethics.
Key topics were addressed during the session, with a particular focus on the concept of ethical boundaries in scientific research and the challenges inherent in defining them amidst rapid scientific progress. Prof. Gerish emphasised the importance of balancing legitimate scientific curiosity with the ethical responsibilities that researchers must uphold, stressing that adherence to ethical principles not only complements innovation but actively reinforces it.
The event also featured the presentation and analysis of real-life case studies where researchers faced ethical dilemmas. This practical insight provided participants with a deeper understanding of the challenges they might encounter in their research endeavours. Moreover, best practices ensuring integrity and transparency in research were reviewed, covering an integrated approach from the study design phase through to the publication of results.
The workshop underlined the vital role that research ethics play in positively impacting society by ensuring that the outcomes of research are of public benefit and that no harm is caused to the intended groups.
Participants were highly engaged and expressed their appreciation for initiatives that enhance professional awareness and foster a culture of responsible research within the academic environment.
