The Doctoral Programme in the Department of Innovation and Technology Management at the Arabian Gulf University (AGU) has recently organised a seminar titled “The Role of Scientific Research in Fostering Arab World’s Innovation and Development” presented by Dr Omar Al Ubaydli, Director of Research at the Bahrain Centre for Strategic, International and Energy Studies “Derasat”. This seminar is part of the Doctoral Programme in Innovation and Technology Management’s commitment to promoting public-private sectors partnerships. This is achieved by presenting and discussing strategic issues with experts and specialists, in conjunction to creating collaborative solutions that stimulate the development cycle in the Gulf region.

During the seminar, Dr Al Ubaydli emphasised the critical role of education in fostering innovation through the redesign of educational curriculum to include methodologies and tools for creative thinking. Additionally, it is recommended to cultivate a culture of intellectual bravery and encourage children and students to instil these cultures and modern sciences for a promising generation, capable of creativity and innovation.

Dr Al Ubaydli also highlighted the significant role of scientific research and the Arab world’s need for increased investment in institutions, research centres and universities to establish a strong foundation in raising awareness of scientific research, which has been recognised as a crucial element in achieving innovation and progress among various fields.

Students emphasised the importance of scientific meetings like these, which pave the way to exchanging ideas and clarifying scientific visions. They stressed the significance of instilling a culture of intellectual bravery in educational and research institutions, as well as enhancing cooperation between universities and research centres in the Arab world. Focusing on scientific research as a tool to tackle the economic and environmental challenges facing the region was also kept into consideration.
