In a move to expand academic and research collaboration in medical education, Arabian Gulf University (AGU) and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland – Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement aims to develop higher education and scientific research programs and promote academic and training initiatives that benefit the health sector in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the wider region.
The MoU was signed on behalf of AGU and RCSI Bahrain by its respective presidents His Excellency Dr Saad bin Saud Al Fuhaid and Professor Sameer Otoom. The ceremony took place at the AGU campus in Manama, attended by several officials from both institutions.
The agreement seeks to strengthen cooperation across multiple areas namely: conducting joint scientific research, faculty exchange, sharing academic schedules, organising joint scientific events such as conferences, workshops, and lectures, collaborating on undergraduate and postgraduate medical education programs, joint supervision of research dissertations, and management of an equally contributed to research fund of BD 20,000 annually. Additionally, the MoU proposes establishing a unified database for student and academic research.
The MoU also establishes a joint steering committee composed of representatives from the vice presidents and deans of postgraduate studies from both institutions. This committee will oversee the implementation of the agreement and ensure effective coordination across all collaborative activities.
In this context, His Excellency Dr Saad Al Fuhaid emphasised, "This agreement aligns with the university's vision to strengthen regional and international partnerships and to expand cooperation in scientific research and advanced medical education. RCSI is a leading institution in health education, thereby this collaboration represents a valuable addition to the university’s academic and research capabilities."
Professor Sameer Otoom expressed his pride in this partnership, stating, "We are honoured to collaborate with AGU, given its esteemed reputation in the region, and anticipate activating this partnership to enhance research excellence and position Bahrain as a regional hub for clinical research."
The agreement is valid for two years, subject to renewal. It provides a flexible framework for cooperation based on mutual understanding and shared interests, encouraging the development of future scientific projects within a framework of academic governance and transparency.
