AGU Organises Interactive Workshop on AI in Healthcare

Arabian Gulf University

30 Dec, 2024

Arabian Gulf University (AGU) organised an interactive workshop in cooperation with the Information Technology Department and the Consultation and Training Centre, moderated by the Director of the Information Technology Department at the University, Professor Adel Bouhoula.

The workshop aimed to introduce the uses of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in the field of medicine and healthcare, such as machine learning and deep learning, to enhance diagnostic accuracy, accelerate medical decision-making, and provide customised treatments that suit the needs of individual patients, besides accelerating innovation in this vital sector.

The workshop began with an introduction to machine learning and its applications in healthcare, such as predicting patient outcomes based on previous health data or classifying medical cases, such as breast cancer. Deep learning techniques based on neural networks were also reviewed, as well as their usage in diagnosis by analysing radiological images, such as detecting cardiac abnormalities or diagnosing Covid-19, which contributes to reduction of medical errors and improved diagnostic accuracy.

The workshop also included interactive sessions to discuss the challenges that may face the application of AI in healthcare institutions. The workshop was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Health and the Royal College of Surgeons - Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI), in addition to AGU faculty.

In a related context, Professor Dr Adel Bouhoula was selected to join the scientific committee of the the 34th International Joint Conference on AI "IJCAI 2025", scheduled to be held in Montreal, Canada in August 2025.
