The Arabian Gulf University (AGU), in partnership with the Supreme Council for the Environment (SCE), recently completed a specialised training programme titled ‘Groundwater Hydrology and Management in the Kingdom of Bahrain.’ The programme saw the participation of twenty trainees, including specialists and engineers from various government agencies involved in the groundwater sector. Supported by the Green Climate Fund, the initiative aimed to strengthen both institutional and human capacities to effectively address climate change challenges and promote the sustainable management of water resources.

Professor Waleed Zubari, Professor of Water Resources at AGU and the lead trainer for the programme, stated that the training equipped participants with advanced knowledge and practical skills in groundwater hydrology. This included understanding hydrological characteristics, analysing groundwater conditions, and utilising scientific models to inform planning and decision-making. The programme also sought to cultivate qualified national personnel in sustainable groundwater management, thereby improving water resource management efficiency and supporting Bahrain’s national efforts to achieve water sustainability.

For her part, Engineer Layla Ali Sabeel, Director of the Climate Change and Sustainable Development Department at SCE, affirmed that this partnership with AGU aligns with the Council’s broader efforts to enhance climate change adaptation by building national expertise in water resources management, which is fundamental to supporting water sustainability. The programme’s outcomes contribute to reinforcing national policies related to water and environmental sectors in accordance with the National Water Strategy (2021–2030), she added, concurrently fostering institutional integration among relevant parties.
