A student research team from the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Arabian Gulf University (AGU) showcased their work at the 5th Oman Neurology Conference, held recently in Muscat. Their research, titled "Schoolteachers Knowledge and Attitudes Toward Students with Epilepsy in the Sultanate of Oman" earned them fourth place among the top five scientific posters out of 24 presented entries.

Supervised by Dr Alaa Elmazni and Dr Mohamed Hany, the research examined the attitudes of school teachers in Muscat Governorate towards students with epilepsy and assessed their readiness to handle epileptic seizures in school settings. According to student Bayan Al Touby, the research concluded that while teachers demonstrated a generally acceptable level of knowledge about epilepsy, there is an urgent need for additional training and awareness regarding first aid for seizures in order to better support epileptic students both academically and socially.

The research team comprised of Bayan Al Touby, Sarah Alshahmi, Maryam Al Amrani, Azza Al-Hajri, and Ghada Musan, of whom the former three presented their findings at the conference alongside distinguished local, regional, and international speakers.

Held under the auspices of the Oman Neurology Society in partnership with the Oman Epilepsy Society, the conference aimed to showcase recent scientific advancements in neurology. It featured a variety of scientific sessions and specialised workshops covering topics such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, cerebrovascular diseases, movement disorders, paediatric neurology, neuromuscular conditions, among other issues.

Educational workshops led by experts discussed clinical cases across specialties, including movement disorders, strokes, and swallowing difficulties in neurological disorder patients
